iv-therapy-fatigueFatigue is one of the most common health complaints of patients we see at the IV Nutrient Therapy Center, often occurring along with depression and stress. Many of our patients tell us they are absolutely exhausted after they come home from work. Or they just can’t seem to get going in the morning; even after a good night’s sleep, they wake up feeling tired. Of course, there are many well-defined causes of fatigue, including bacterial and viral infections; the flu is notorious for making you feel “knocked out.” Diet can also be a factor: if you eat too many simple carbohydrates like sugary sweets and high fructose corn syrup, you have a quick rise in energy but then a prolonged “crash.”

Hidden Causes of Fatigue

Sometimes, the cause of fatigue is hard to identify. Vitamin deficiencies, particularly deficiency in B vitamins, can also cause fatigue. So can hormonal imbalances – particularly those found in PMS and adrenal insufficiency.

Other underlying chronic disease states, such as inflammatory bowel disease, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), and connective tissue disorders may also be responsible for your fatigue.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) affects millions of Americans. For many years, however, it was not given the attention it deserved, and countless sufferers were told it was not a real disease, or it was all in their heads. When you have CFS, you feel like you are always tired, and there doesn’t seem to be an obvious medical cause. For this reason, CFS is really a diagnosis of exclusion, because other possibilities have been ruled out. An important breakthrough came with the finding that a significant percentage of CFS patients had evidence of infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the same virus that causes mononucleosis! However, many CFS patients have no detectable EBV in their system.

Intravenous Vitamin Therapy as Fatigue Treatment

At the IV Nutrient Therapy Center, we will first run a series of diagnostic tests to try to determine the underlying cause of your fatigue. If there is a bacterial infection, we will treat the infection with antibiotics; if it is a viral infection, such as a cold or flu, antibiotics are not effective and will not be prescribed. The following types of IV vitamin therapy have been shown to be helpful in treating fatigue:
